Chennai Super Kings Dealt Blow with Matheesha Pathirana’s Injury
Chennai Super Kings, the reigning champions of the Indian Premier League (IPL), faced a setback as pacer Matheesha Pathirana suffered a Grade 1 hamstring strain during a recent T20I match against Bangladesh. The injury, which occurred on March 6, raised concerns for the CSK camp ahead of the IPL opener on March 22.
Pathirana’s Setback
During the second T20I against Bangladesh, Pathirana experienced discomfort, leading him to exit the field prematurely without completing his bowling spell. Sri Lanka Cricket confirmed the injury, stating that Pathirana would not be available for the upcoming match due to the hamstring strain.
In the match, Pathirana managed to bowl 3.4 overs, claiming two wickets while conceding 28 runs. However, his departure due to injury left CSK with uncertainties regarding his availability for the initial matches of the IPL.
Recovery Timeline
According to IPL sources, Grade 1 hamstring injuries typically require nearly two weeks for full recovery. As a result, Pathirana’s return timeline remains uncertain, casting doubts on his participation in the early fixtures of the league.
Pathirana’s Crucial Role
Pathirana played a significant role in CSK’s triumphant campaign in the previous IPL season, securing 19 wickets from 12 matches. His absence due to injury poses a challenge for CSK as they prepare to defend their title in the upcoming edition.

Additional Setback with Devon Conway’s Absence
Adding to CSK’s woes, opener Devon Conway has been sidelined due to a thumb injury sustained during a T20I series against Australia. Conway’s absence for at least the first half of the IPL deprives CSK of their leading run-scorer from the previous season, where he amassed 672 runs with an average close to 52.
With key players like Pathirana and Conway facing injuries, CSK must reassess their strategies and adapt to ensure a strong start to their IPL campaign.
